From a young age, Prudence Munyendo dreamed of becoming a teacher, but her large family of 11 and her parents’ unstable income made this seem unattainable. Despite her strong academic performance, poverty limited her opportunities. After passing the KCPE twice, Prudence struggled to secure funding for high school. Her mother’s attempts to get a government bursary were unsuccessful, forcing Prudence to attend a local day school through community fundraising.

Determined to continue her education, Prudence sought sponsorships and eventually learned about the CHES program. This sponsorship allowed her to transfer to a better school, where she excelled in her KCSE exams in 2013. Financial constraints delayed her college education until 2016, when a tutor encouraged her to enroll in Kibabii Diploma Teacher Training College without initial payment. In 2017, she applied for and received an ACCES scholarship, which enabled her to complete a diploma in Education (English/French) in 2019.

In February 2023, Prudence was employed as a teacher at St. Mary’s Mukumu Girls’ Junior Secondary School on permanent and pensionable terms. She is the only one of her four sisters to progress beyond primary school, and she remains optimistic that her two brothers, who attended post-secondary education, will also find employment.

Prudence is pictured here at work with some of her students.

Prudence is an active alumni member. She was recently elected to join the executive committee of the ACCES Scholars’ Foundation and regularly volunteers to support the scholarship review process.

Prudence is deeply grateful to ACCES for the scholarship that transformed her life, lifting her out of poverty and enabling her to achieve her dream of becoming a teacher.
